Why did VIACOM choose JIO Cinemas over VOOT?
The one thing that has been trending on Twitter as the FIFA World Cup began in Qatar, is the JioCinema app.
But why?
Jio Cinema is streaming the FIFA world cup live for free but why?
Anil Jayaraj, CEO of Viacom18 Sports, had indicated that free streaming would ensure “easy access” for viewers.
Viacom18 is a joint venture between Reliance-controlled TV18 and US entertainment giant Paramount Global (previously Viacom CBS).
After the successful merger with Viacom 18 in Sep 2022, Viacom18 shifted all its sporting content from VOOT to JioCinema making it the digital sporting destination of the network.
Note: VOOT is a video-on-demand (OTT) platform, part of Viacom18 Digital Ventures, the digital arm of Viacom18.
The reason behind selecting Jiocinema over VOOT was the higher base of the service.
Jio wants to strengthen its service or solve the streaming issues before the IPL.
Viacom18 has the streaming rights for IPL from 2023 to 2027 (bagged at Rs 23,758 crore)
This strategy of easy access to the FIFA World Cup will help Jio to reach India’s 700-million-strong internet-enabled mobile devices.
While the digital and television rights for the FIFA World Cup were acquired for nearly Rs 450 crore by Viacom18 last year.
Viacom expects Rs. 300 crore of Ads revenue from FIFA 2022 which covers more than half of the rights cost and free telecast will help them to acquire a larger audience with IPL ahead
We all know how RIL is an expert in giving free service initially and making money afterward with a live example Jio Telecom.
And to acquire more customers Jio Cinema made it available for all telcos such as Airtel, Vi, and many more across all devices for free.
